A Jointly-Awarded PhD program allows approved PhD students to be supervised jointly by academics from the University of Melbourne and academics from a nominated approved university. The Agreement for a Jointly-Awarded PhD Degree is not an application form for PhD candidature. Applicants for a Jointly-Awarded PhD program not currently enrolled at The University of Melbourne must therefore also submit a hard copy application for PhD candidature. See 'Application for Graduate Research Degree Candidature and Scholarships' above.
Graduate Research Scholarships
The University of Melbourne uses one application form for both application to candidature and/or for graduate research scholarships. This form should be used by both local and international applicants who are applying for a new degree course and/or scholarship. Current University of Melbourne graduate researchers who want to apply for a scholarship for the course in which they are currently enrolled should apply online via the Student Portal. See 'Application for Graduate Research Degree Candidature and Scholarships' above.
It is important to consider scholarship application deadlines when preparing your graduate research degree application. Many Faculties and Graduate Schools will assess applications for admission at any time, but there is only one application round for the major scholarships. Please visit the Melbourne Scholarships Office page for details of all scholarship deadlines.
Variations to Candidature
Variations to candidature - including leave of absence, study away from the University, change in study rates between full-time and part-time, change of supervisor, and withdrawal - can now be applied for via the Student Portal.
Candidates may apply to change the academic unit in which they are based using the following Application for Change of Department form. This form incorporates an application for change of supervisor. Applications for change of department require the approval of the new head of department, and where this entails a change of faculty, of the faculty dean. Please note changes to teaching responsibility % splits for joint department enrolments which do not involve a change of administrative department should be made via the online Application for Change of Supervisor form via the Student Portal.
Extensions to the period of candidature and applications to lapse in good standing are applied for using the progress report 'Attachment A'. If you require assistance with the application process please contact your Faculty or Graduate School Graduate Research Administrator.

Including publications and collaborative work in a PhD thesis
PhD candidates can include publications which they have completed during their candidature in their published form in their thesis provided they are the primary author and have completed ≥50% of the work. Any collaborators must approve their inclusion as well as the inclusion of any work in the thesis that is not solely the candidates. The Including publications and collaborative work in a PhD thesis page and the PhD Handbook contain information on the requirements for including publications and collaborative work in a PhD thesis. The Declaration of Collaborative Work form is used to acknowledge the contributions of other authors to collaborative work being included in a PhD thesis. The completed form as well as a Collaborator Authorisation form, completed by each collaborator, must be attached to the Submission of Thesis Form that is submitted with the copies of the thesis.
