Additional information for JointPhD examiners
Joint PhD candidates are admitted to a joint degree across two institutions. If you are appointed as an external examiner for a Joint PhD, this will be indicated in the invitation email sent from the Graduate Research Examinations office (gr-exams@unimelb.edu.au).
In most cases, the same external examiners are nominated by both institutions, so you may be contacted separately by each institution. Thesis examinations are usually managed in parallel and may have slightly different requirements, such as different outcomes that you can recommend.
At the University of Melbourne, examinations are managed through the Thesis Examination System (TES), where you will be asked to:
- Confirm your acceptance as an external examiner
- Download the thesis when it is ready for examination
- Submit your report/s
- Submit your details to receive your examiner payment.
If a viva (oral examination) is required, you may be invited to participate. The host institution will contact you directly to arrange the viva.
No communication is permitted between external examiners, the candidate and their supervisors during the thesis examination period.
